私の作品は使われてこそアートとしての完成があります。従って、機能的な陶器を作る事は、私とお客様の共同作業なんです。アメリカ在住の陶芸家、トーマス荒川さんはそうおっしゃいます。 荒川さんは仙台生まれで、それだけでも親近感を感じるのですが、その作品に私はとても絵画的なものを感じるのです。

私は日本生まれの日本育ちですが、１９才の時アメリカに渡りました。
人生の半分を日本で過ごし、後の半分をアメリカで過ごしたことになります。
渡米後、ロスガトスのBlossom Hill Crafts Potteryで陶器制作をスタートしました。
私はアメリカで製陶を学んだのですが、
私が作る作品は常に日本文化と共通したものがあります。
内なる日本的な文化遺産と私に及ぼすアメリカ文化の影響を確認する事が、
私の陶器の制作プロセスです。

私は、陶器を作るその過程が好きです。
また、人々の日常生活の中で使われてこそ価値がある…
それが、私が思う作品のあり方です。
ものづくりは製品に込める感情や情熱がいかに反映されるか、
それが大切だと私は考えています。
私の思いを込めた独自の陶器が、アメリカのライフスタイルにとけ込み、
お客様の日常生活を豊かなものに出来たらと願っているのです。

陶器をひとつひとつ手作りで続ける事は、お客様と私が人と人の関係であること…
そうありたいのです。
作品を制作しながら、
お客様はどう使ってくれるんだろう、生活にどんな影響を与える事ができるんだろう…
いつもそんな事を考えます。
このことは私に、使って下さる方々とのユニークな関わりをもたらします。
機能的な陶器を作る事は、私とお客様の共同作業のようなものであり、
それが私の目指すアートの目的です。
私が機能的なものを作ったとしても、
それはアートとしての完成度はまだ半分なのです。
私が作った生け花や盆栽の器は、
そこにお客様が植物を生けてくださった時点でアートとして完成します。
私の食器がアートとして完成するとき…
それは、お客様が料理を盛りつけ、日常生活で使ってくださったときなのです。

Artist Statement
I was born and raised in Japan, and I came to the United States when I was 19. I spent the half of my life in Japan and another half in the United States. I started making pots in 2009 at Blossom Hill Crafts Pottery in Los Gatos. Although I learned pottery in America, what I make always resembles Japanese culture. To me, the process of making pottery is affirmation of my Japanese heritage and the American influence to me.
I love the process of making pottery. The things exist just as my imagination become tangible objects which add value to people’s everyday life. Almost at all stages of the pottery making process, the creation is measured by human senses. The handmade process measured by the human senses reflects my emotion and passion in the tangible result.
I aspire to make unique functional pottery that reflect myself, fit American life style, and enrich customers everyday life. I would like to keep making handmade pottery so that customers can relate my work to me as person. As I am making pottery I think about how individual customers use my pieces and how it affects their life. This gives me a unique connection with the people who use my pots.
I achieve my goal by making functional pottery as an collaborative work between me and customers. Most of my functional-ware are half complete as art. My ikibana vessel and bonsai pots are complete as art when customer put their plants. My dinnerware are complete as art when customers place their food and used in their everyday life.
